The Smart Export Guarantee is the replacement to the Feed-In Tariff which mandates that energy companies must pay for any power that you supply to the grid.
Solar panels will generally produce more power than you need, even when paired with a storage battery. Luckily, you can get paid for your excess production.
Your system will take care of your home’s immediate energy needs whilst it is producing electricity, and when the system is producing more than your home needs it will store it in your battery. Once your home’s needs are met, and your battery system is full, this doesn’t mean your system stops producing energy, and it is this excess that can be sold back to the energy companies.
The UK government made the decision that from 2020 any home using renewable energy sources had to be guaranteed at least one tariff from every major energy supplier that could be used to sell the energy back to the national grid. Now every energy company in the country with over 150, 000 customers must guarantee at least one tariff for its customers to export their excess energy back to the grid.
The old way of selling your energy back to the grid was the Feed-In Tariff, and whilst that hasn’t been an option since early 2019, solar panel owners are still guaranteed to be paid for their excess energy production when exporting it back into the grid – thanks to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
The SEG simply means that the biggest energy companies have to offer a tariff to buy your excess energy, but the price is open to competition and the onus is on you as a customer to find the best deal. You’ll also need to make sure you have a smart meter to identify how much is being exported back too.
Different suppliers will offer different tariffs and rates as the price is no longer fixed, but with energy companies facing huge costs in buying energy from traditional sources, they are increasingly paying their customers more. As competition is only set to intensify, more and more suppliers are offering higher and higher rates, which could pay you £100’s each year.
